Hello Ranchlands School Community!

Vocabulary and English Language Development

Building vocabulary is the crux of English Language Development. English Language learners at a very beginning level may have a vocabulary of 500 words building their vocabulary to almost 25 000 at an advanced level in elementary school years. Vocabulary consists of everyday basic and utility words, descriptive words, and later, academic and subject specific vocabulary. Utility and basic words can be learned through everyday interactions and conversations; however, descriptive and academic vocabulary must be taught intentionally.
Newcomers and English Language Learners learned the history and meaning around Remembrance Day. Students learned descriptive and specific vocabulary related to Remembrance Day and recorded them in their personal dictionaries.

Bridge Club

This week in Bridge Club students learned about emotions and how to regulate their feelings. Students talked about certain colours that are associated with emotions and made collages to represent how they were feeling.
